Read Write Inc. is a popular phonics scheme. It teaches children the sounds in English, the letters that represent them, and how to form the letters when writing. Read Write Inc. Phonics includes reading books written using only the letters they have learnt at each level and a small number of separately taught 'red words.' Red words are words that are not easily phonetically decoded. The children will quickly feel confident and successful.

Within the scheme we use some key teaching phrases which are explained below:

Children start learning their sounds formally in Reception. We start by teaching set 1 (single letter sounds and some special friends) and then move on to Set 2 and 3. Below are copies of parent letters which explain the order of sounds and what children learn in each group.
