Welcome to St Mary’s Primary School
Year 5 had a fantastic visit to 9Pier Road, followed by a short guided walk around St Helier looking for evidence of the Victorian era. Alice, from Jersey Heritage, was an amazing guide. We consolidated our learning in school and linked this to local History. We also had a lot of fun playing with the Victorian toys in the nursery! sadly, we were too big for the rocking horse....
KS2 went to St Mary's Church for assembly. Rev Kirsty talked to us about the windows designed by local artist Henry Thomas Bosdet in the late 19th/ early 20th century. We had the opportunity to see some of his original sketches.
Nursery and Reception have returned to the theme of invertebrates this week as the children love bug hunting so much! We have explored the forest school area and the pond, handled snails and picked wild garlic to make garlic butter pastry snails for snack time.
Year 4 and 6 took part in the Jason Rebello Jazz workshop this morning. Another treat of amazing musicians! We learnt all about jazz and improvisation. We talked about the importance of practice and learning scales so you have the freedom to improvise. Two of our students even got to have a go at improvising on the piano with the musicians accompanying them! One piece got titled 'I Don't Know' (was improvised using the C major scale - white notes only) and the other was fondly named 'Chicken Nugget' and used the black notes.
Year 5 and 6 were fantastic sports people and ambassadors for St Mary's school today at the tag rugby tournament. Both teams played with enthusiasm, inclusivity, enjoyment and skill. Year 5 came second in a tough group of opponents in the rounds. Year 6 made it through to the semi-finals. Great achievement for both teams.
Year 3 had a wonderful morning at the Maritime Museum. We learnt all about Viking clothing, weapons and Gods. We tried on helmets and necklaces, plus explored the evidence of Viking invasions in Jersey!
Something to do this weekend, if you're free...
We hope you are enjoying Liberation Day! Just a reminder that school is closed tomorrow (Friday, May 10th) for staff training.
Pétanque is back for the summer!
Today Year 2 visited the Synagogue as part of our topic about Judaism. We learnt a lot about the Jewish religion from Mrs Bernstein. The children asked some great questions and enjoyed being able to see lots of the things we have been learning about.
Foundation to Year 5 enjoyed the most sensational concert by the Jersey Music Service staff. We were all clapping and toe tapping, and singing along (in all the right places!). Thank you to Graham Cox and his excellent team - a 22 piece orchestra in our library was a rare treat! Watch out for a couple of the video clips. Find out more about your child learning to play an instrument at www.jms.je
We are designers. Year 5 have been designing and creating their own cam toys. We have learnt many new skills and vocabulary. We have been using junior hacksaws in a pistol grip, 3 jaw chucks, g clamps and bench hooks. We evaluated our finished toys, which is a very important part of the process. Most of all, we had a lot of fun.
